Here in Pittsburgh and across the midwest, spring is closer than it may seem! It’s not too soon to walk about your outdoor living space and make a list of anything that needs your attention. When it’s nice enough to get out there and start knocking items off your to-do list, you’ll have a plan.
OUR TIPS TO GET YOUR PATIO READY
Declutter and sweep
Clear away leaves, debris, and any items that have been left out (like that abandoned frisbee that’s been laying out there since November).
Repair or replace
Inspect your patio furniture, cushions, and accessories for damage and mend what you can. If something is beyond repair, toss it. Inspect the surface of your deck or patio for safety. If you notice cracks, splinters, loose boards, popped-up nails, or uneven areas, come up with a plan to address them yourself, or give us a call so we can handle it for you.
Wash surfaces
Power wash your fence, deck, and patio to remove mold, mildew, dirt, and residue. Scrub any stubborn stains. This will enhance its longevity and keep it looking well-maintained.
Repaint or reseal wood
To keep it looking like new, and protect it from the elements, wooden decks need to be restained every 1-3 years. Consider repainting or resealing your fence and any other wooden elements.
Plan your plants
Take a step back and look over your whole outdoor living space. Plan where you might add joy and color through potted plants, flowers, or even a garden. Remember that your home’s exterior may be able to accommodate hanging baskets, planters, or window boxes. The possibilities are endless! If you have questions about what to plant and where, head to your favorite greenhouse or nursery. If you are in the Pittsburgh area and want to delegate the whole project, call us at JJ Outdoor Living.
Level up your outdoor lighting
Repair, install, or update outdoor lighting using string lights, lanterns, or solar-powered fixtures. If you’re interested in a built-in lighting system, that’s one of our specialties. Outdoor lighting increases security, looks beautiful, and adds charm.
Throw some shade
Which parts of your space have been hard to fully enjoy because there isn’t adequate shade? Consider adding an umbrella, pergola, or retractable awning to provide shade during sunny days. This will make your patio more comfortable and enjoyable.
Tune up your grill
If you have a grill, check for any needed repairs and give it a deep clean. If it’s connected to the gas line, ensure that the connection is ship-shape. Finally, stock up on propane or charcoal, so that the only things you need to entertain are a couple clicks of the tongs and some quality steaks.
Does that sound like a lot? We get it. That’s why we are posting this now!
Take it one step at a time, and you’ll get it all done before Memorial Day, with time to spare. If you want a great outdoor space, but DIY’ing it isn’t your bag, let a local landscaper manage it all for you. For the Pittsburgh area, that means inquiring with JJ Outdoor Living.
